“For He satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry soul He fills with good things.”
— Psalm 107:9
When Faith Feels Still
Every believer—no matter how strong, sincere, or seasoned—faces seasons of spiritual dryness.
You open your Bible and nothing stirs.
You pray and feel silence.
You worship and feel disconnected.
You aren’t backsliding.
You aren’t abandoned.
You aren’t broken.
You’re human.
But Scripture offers something powerful in these dry seasons:
the reminder that God nourishes those who hunger for Him, even when they don’t “feel” Him.
1. Dry Seasons Are Normal — and Biblical
David cried:
“My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You…”
— Psalm 63:1
Job said:
“Behold, I go forward, but He is not there… yet He knows the way I take.”
— Job 23:8–10
Even Jesus experienced spiritual anguish in Gethsemane.
Dryness isn’t failure.
It’s part of the journey.
Sometimes it’s a test.
Sometimes it’s a transition.
Sometimes it’s preparation for deeper intimacy.
2. Why Scripture Is Essential in Dry Seasons
When your emotions are silent, God’s Word is not.
Scripture does something nothing else can do:
A. It bypasses the feelings and feeds the soul.
Feelings fluctuate.
Truth does not.
B. It renews the mind when the heart is tired.
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
The Word rewires your thinking even when emotions lag behind.
C. It reminds you who God is when you forget who you are.
God’s character isn’t defined by our condition.
D. It breaks through dryness with supernatural nourishment.
“My word… will not return to Me empty.” (Isaiah 55:11)
When nothing else works, Scripture still works.
3. What Should You Read When You Feel Nothing?
Here are Scriptures that awaken dry souls:
🔹 Psalms of honesty — Psalm 42, 63, 77
Perfect when emotions feel numbed.
🔹 Gospel red letters — Matthew 5–7, John 14–17
Let Jesus speak directly to your dryness.
🔹 Isaiah 40–43
For comfort, reassurance, and renewed strength.
🔹 1 John
Short, powerful truths about assurance and God’s love.
Don’t overthink it.
Open the Word.
Let the breath of God begin to work again.
4. Three Ways to Break Through Spiritual Dryness
A. Read Slowly, Not Quickly
This is not the time for Bible plans or “read the Bible in a year.”
It’s the time for:
- Short passages
- Slow reading
- Deep reflection
Let a single verse work on you.
B. Read Out Loud
Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17).
Sometimes your heart needs to hear your own voice say the Word.
C. Pray the Scripture Back to God
Not eloquently.
Not perfectly.
Just honestly.
For example:
“Lord, You said You satisfy the thirsty soul… I’m thirsty. Satisfy me.”
5. Why Dry Seasons Are Actually Dangerous Without the Word
Here’s the part most Christians overlook:
The enemy loves spiritual dryness.
Because dryness produces:
- Doubt
- Distance
- Discouragement
- Distraction
But Scripture brings:
- Clarity
- Courage
- Conviction
- Connection
When your soul is dry, the Word is water.
Conclusion: God Meets You in the Dry Places
Dryness is not a sign God is distant.
It is often the place He does His deepest work.
Keep opening your Bible.
Keep listening for His voice.
Keep coming to the well.
One moment, one verse, one whisper from God can break the drought.
And when it does…
Your faith emerges stronger than before.
“For He fills the hungry soul with good things.”
